APERTUS AXIOM

by: Alex Flemmings on

We want to talk about a movement we have been watching for quite some time now, namely Apertus Open Source Cinema. The goal of the Apertus project is to create a powerful, free (in terms of liberty) and open cinema camera that we as filmmakers love to use. The idea of using an Elphel camera for this particular purpose was born in 2006, found many followers over the years and ultimately resulted in this community driven project entitled "Apertus" (Latin for Free, Open) and this website, www.apertus.org.

Heres the latest post from APERTUS.
Now there is no turning back anymore. Today we announced the product name of our new camera in the first of the Apertus talks in the Media, Radio, Television and Professional Graphics category at LSM. The future of open cinema cameras from now on has a name: APERTUS AXIOM

Axiom

We have actually been rather careful and secretive not to release too much information about the new camera on the Internet as we do not want to follow the unfortunately quite commmon practice of how other companies announce their products: they just promise you whatever you want to hear and a couple of years later they admit that this product is not ever going to see the light of the day. So we made sure that what we announce is solid and well thought through. But still a word of precaution: We will need your help to create Axiom, only if we manage to succeed with our kickstarter campaign we will be able to afford the development. Currently we are still working on preparing the material for the campaign, unfortunately its taking longer than we hoped it would - Watch this video below and stay tuned.

The Wizard of Digital Filmaking

by: Alex Flemmings on

The Wizard

The Wizard is at it again. Yes, Machete Kills aka Machete 2 seems to be a reality. The Rodriquez film is said to have a release date sometime next year (2013). As expected, this pioneer in digital filmmaking is seen shooting with the Alexa Digital Cinema camera.

Sexy Sophia

Director Robert Rodriguez known for films such as - El mariachi (1992) - which made him the legend of independent, ultra-low budget filmmaking. His further career is a sign for young filmmakers that even the wildest dreams may come true if you are brave enough to follow your own path. Since then, Robert has written, directed, edited, and/or produced around 12 movies (as of 2007), including: Desperado(1995), From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), The Faculty (1998) and Spy Kids (2001).

C300 has all the Bells and Whistles

by: Alex Flemmings on

Canon C300The Canon C300 is finally starting to ship, and so far the verdict seems to be that C300 = "Awesome" – see the linked video and you’ll get it…  You can also check out my initial review of the camera HERE.  And it’s true – in terms of imaging, the C300 is really quite impressive.  However, you’ll quickly find yourself needing a rig to mount traditional cine/doc accessories to the C300.  The C300 was built as most camcorders are – without much thought to allowing for mounting points for accessories and that remains something that I hope they take into account with their next camera (besides not being able to over crank 60 fps or more at full resolution.

Brand Preservation

by: Javia Flemmings on

Branding is fundamental to distinguishing your product/service from others that may be similar and influence those which are complementary. In branding it is also important that a company does not undermine its product by representing itself below the standards expected or below the standards of its “Class.” The perfect example of this is the new highly acclaimed 3 minute Cartier advertisement production! It has created a major stir among major industry players. Ad Age has reported that it cost approximately $5.3 million to produce excluding the advertisement airtime; and a turnaround time of 2 years from Pre-Production to Final Output.

This high end production does an excellent job of creating nostalgia and an emotional connection with its target audience.  It has excelled at matching its product class with the promotional material it produces. We couldn’t possibly expect a company of Cartier’s caliber to produce a video costing anything less than $5.3 million. Perhaps this ad has opened the market for your company to invest in a short film promotional piece!
